This book offers practical help for patients, their families and loved ones. Although bipolar disorder is relatively common, clinical research shows that the most frequent treatments lead to poor outcomes in all but a small minority of patients. Calm Seas shares approaches which have been shown to lead to long periods of stable recovery in many patients.
Feel as if bipolar disorder is untreatable? Bipolar disorder strikes many of us as mysterious. The patients themselves often don't view it as a problem. Those loved ones trying to pick up the pieces often don't know where to turn for help. Employers and family don't know if there is any chance the condition will ever become manageable, etc.
Bipolar disorder seems to many to be difficult to treat, or perhaps even untreatable. Many patients, families, and even clinicians, however, don't seem to be aware that the treatment approaches most commonly used in the United States have repeatedly been shown in clinical research studies to lead to poor outcomes in all but a small minority of patients.
Yet scientifically documented and much more successful treatment approaches are readily available, and have been shown to lead to long periods of stable recovery in many patients. Unfortunately, these approaches have been almost completely forgotten. They aren't widely known, taught, or applied.
In the meantime, 2 1/2 million people with bipolar disorder in the US alone continue to suffer an unpredictable, out of control, emotionally painful inability to function for years or decades of their lives due to bipolar disorder, with significant risk of suicide. The odds aren't very good unless they and their loved ones become experts on the progression and treatment of bipolar disorder. Helping them to do so is the purpose of this book.
These are the lessons the author has learned in his thirty years of treating patients and his extensive review of the clinical research literature on the treatment of bipolar disorder. Based on the above observations, he has come to see that one of his main functions with his own patients is to teach them, and their families and loved ones, to understand bipolar disorder and its treatment.
In the process he has routinely seen his patients and families take on a considerably more active role in their treatment. This collaborative approach, together with an evidence-based approach to the treatment, seems to help the patients become much steadier. Many of them reach stable recovery, that is six months or more with more even moods, no major mood episodes, and greater ability to function in their lives.
This book describes bipolar disorder and its successful treatment in considerable detail, focusing primarily on those factors that affect long-term outcomes. The book uses numerous pictures, graphs, tables, and clinical case histories to simplify and explain the story and make it more understandable.

I happen to be a psychiatrist, and I have enjoyed reading this book, and eventually learning some good points. I agree that most psychiatrists in U.S. are polarity based who diagnose depression when they see a patient who has depressive symptoms. It is a also sad fact that they do not get collateral information from a spouse or other family member. Furthermore, most psychiatrist do not get a course ( timeline) of the illness, thereby missing bipolar disorder, especially the milder varieties.

I must also point out that this book could easily have been condensed into half if the author had avoided repetition. The book is full of 'filler'. I also did not like the back cover of the book because it has a multiple choice question which is so moronic that it insults the readers intelligence.
The book uses DSM IV. TR. However a new edition of DSM- V came out in 2013 which in fact relaxed the criteria meant to diagnose the Bipolar dis. In retrospect the author was correct.
On the whole a good book which will help psychiatrists, and their patients.

CALM SEAS Keys to the Successful Treatment of Bipolar Disorder edition by Roger Sparhawk Elissa Folk Susan A Duppstadt Professional Technical eBooks Reviews

I haven't finished reading this, but already I have brand-new tools to apply. Aside from keys to a useful journal and exercises to focus on, this book offers a current selection of medications prescribed for specific symptoms of bipolar disorder and documented side-effects. I recently had my medications re-evaluated and am experiencing a 're-birth' of sorts. Anyone who suspects they may have this illness, or who suffers from other forms of mental illness such as depression, anxiety or substance abuse, will find up-to-the-minute information that can give them the tools to regain their sanity, perhaps for the very first time. This is a book for clinicians and the layman alike; clinical information that is too complex is segregated into smaller chapters that may be skipped if one desires, though you may be tempted to turn back. There is also website information where those who aren't sure whether they have bipolar disorder can take a free quiz.
The most helpful book about BPII and the best way to treat it. It has literally changed lives of many of my clients and made me a much better psychologist. It is understandable by the lay person and can bet given to a client who will probably recognized him/herself. We had Sparhawk come lecture to professionals in our area and he was fantastic. Then our professional group gave copies to all the prescribers in our area. This is such a wonderful resource. Buy it . Buy several copies to loan out.
The author has a nice, easy writing style well-suited for patients and their families. I can also imagine it being helpful to clinicians as well. It's obvious that he has a lot of experience and knowledge about bipolar disorder, and good for all that he has taken the time to demystify/debunk approaches that don't work and to suggest helpful alternatives.
need to get some medical trial to test this out - if he is right - antidepressives should not be used for Bi-polar folk- then folks should know and the book should get five stars - evidence is convincing - is it the drug companies that hold back the truth?
Concise; practical; based on reputable clinical research and author's clinical treatment experience. Makes much of the complex simpler. Provides perspective on life-time course of bipolar illness; various clinical presentations during early and later phases. Based on long-term illness management with recurrence and severity reduction versus focus on short-term polar symptom management. Makes strong points about misuse/overuse of antidepressants in managing depressive symptoms that are really part of a mixed episode (the more common picture in later stages, especially.) Has some meat on the bone for clinicians, but also within reach of laypersons, friends, loved-ones.
DR. SPARHAWK'S PASSION TO SEE MILLIONS OF BI-POLAR SUFFERERS AND THEIR SUPPORTERS HELPED IS FELT THROUGHOUT THE PAGES OF THIS OUTSTANDING BOOK. HE HAS SPENT YEARS COMMITTED TO THOROUGH RESEARCH ON THE SUBJECT AND IS TO BE RESPECTED AND COMMENDED FOR HIS DEDICATION. MY WIFE WAS REFERRED TO DR. SPARHAWK SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND WE HAVE FOUND HIS PERSONAL INTEREST AND COMPASSIONATE CARE FOR HER TO BE OUTSTANDING AND OF COURSE, IN COMPLETE CONJUNCTION WITH THE TRUTHS HE HAS DISCOVERED IN HIS RESEARCH. HE HAS SUCCESSFULLY TREATED COUNTLESS PEOPLE WITH BI-POLAR CONDITION WITH HIS PASSION, KNOWLEDGE AND COMPASSION! THIS BOOK IS A "MUST READ" FOR BI-POLAR PATIENTS AND THEIR SUPPORT PEOPLE. ALSO, I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS WHO HAVE STRUGGLED THROUGH YEARS OF UNSUCCESSFUL TREATMENT OR ARE UNCERTAIN IF THEY MAY BE EXPERIENCING THIS OFTEN DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE MENTAL CONDITION...IT COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
This is an excellent primer for families and clinicians looking for a comprehensive guide to help support a loved one diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. Despite how much we seem to know about mental health and how commonly the term 'bi-polar' gets thrown around it is much more difficult to get an accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment than one might imagine. Getting to see Dr. Sparhawk is difficult so reading his book might be the next best thing. Medication is certainly one component of a comprehensive treatment plan but he also expands on all of the other essentials one of the most important being having family members involved in care planning. In these days of privacy and HIPAA it can be the most frustrating thing to see your loved one struggling and have no access to their care provider because of privacy laws. This book explains why it is essential to have families part of the treatment team - highly recommend!
